The book is based on the revised syllabus of the Nursing Council of India for 'B.Sc. Nursing' course and contains MCQs (multiple-choice questions) with answers. This is a useful textbook, primarily meant for nurses who play a very important role in the health care industry. Since physics has several applications in biology and medicine (physiology, radiology, radiotherapy, cardiology, neurology, audiology and so on), it is important that nurses be aware about the principles of physics that govern the biomedical equipments they come across everyday.

This book is divided into 11 chapters, of which the introductory chapters deal with basic physics. The author has taken efforts to explain the principle and working of several instruments and apparatus used by nurses. The simple illustrations and diagrams will help the reader understand the concepts better.

One of the highlights of this book is that the principles of physics have been related with certain physiological functions of the human body, such as vision and diseases related to eyesight. These illustrations help the readers grasp the principles easily. Thermal effects in the body and different types of heating techniques have been explained well. The explanations of the basic principles of imaging equipments like CT, MRI and ultrasound are informative and will enlighten the reader. Likewise, the radiation safety regulations will help the nonradiation workers become aware of the general hazards of radiation and thereby avoid unnecessary radiation exposure. This will also help eradicate radiation phobia of staff involved in the radiation field. The chapter on electronics covers digital instruments such as pulse oximeters and digital thermometers and also includes live-saving equipments such as defibrillators, pacemakers and ventilators.

In general, this book explains the fundamental principles of physics involved in various medical applications, which will help a nurse to understand and handle biomedical equipments better. It can also serve as a basic textbook for students entering paramedical courses, giving them a broader idea about the physical principles of different biomedical systems. The author of the book, Prof. K. Thayalan, a senior medical physicist, has been lecturing on medical physics to the students of radiodiagnosis and radiotherapy for the past two decades and is currently professor and head, Department of Physics, Madras Medical College and Government General Hospital, Chennai, India.
